DKL Study History: 1.5 years
After final exams, DKL students are often invited to attend their school’s academic seminars, and to share study tips to classmates. A good portion of DKL students regularly obtain an A or A+ score on their final term school reports. What learning path do they follow on a daily basis? What challenges are they up against?
DKL Studio invited Ray, Ellen. and Jack. to share their “secret recipes”.
Ray, Age 7, Citipointe Christian College, Sydney, Australia)
Spring semester, 2021, the school report shows that Ray. has received the top score, 8 points, for every skill required in the English subject. No more than 3 students across their grade have earned such high recognition.

Surprisingly, Ray. isn’t viewed as being nerdy at all. He was just rewarded as “the most valuable player” on school’s soccer team. If you ask him about soccer, he can keep talking all day from passing techniques, to teamwork strategy, and to anecdotes on his favorite soccer stars.
In the English subject, Ray thinks that the most difficult thing is “understanding character relationships and character emotions.” We have come a long way in the exploration of emotions.
DKL Teacher:
If the coach can only select one soccer player for the semi-final game,
what emotions might the players who are not selected feel?
Ray:
Disappointment, or jealousy?
DKL Teacher:
If you are a person that’s left behind, what would you feel?
Ray:
That’s impossible. I’m always the chosen one.
DKL Teacher:
What if somehow you switch identities with someone not chosen?
Ray:
Well, I’ll probably be angry.
DKL Teacher:
Right. Now let’s look at the girl in the text story. She got sick because she is concerned about winning the competition; but also for making her best friend angry in the competition.
Ray:
Oh right! She got sick because she is worried and angry at the same time!
Creating a Story
After many sessions of exploration, Ray was able to create the story One Day in the Life of an Eagle. Little A showed a great grasp of the actions and emotions of a hunting bald eagle, in a dynamic narrative that is well beyond his age requirement.

One Day in the Life of an Eagle
I lifted off into the snowy afternoon sky. I swooped and soared in the sky, hungry for fish.
I swooped down, sliding gracefully across the surface of water. I stretched out my sharp talon as I plucked the fish out.
I felt a fast wind coming towards me, another cheeky eagle was trying to grab my lunch! What a shameless thief!
I quickly dropped the fish in order to prevent him from stealing my fish. But I still felt mad, and I stormed away with no fish.
Successfully, I grabbed another fish, and I returned to a big tree that was tall and isolated, so that I could eat in peace, while the other eagle would have to find his own lunch.
After that, I left the tree and soared in the sky, feeling the gust of the wind on my powerful wings.
I am King of the sky, and I rule on top of the world. (by Ray, Age 7)
