Jack (Age 10) — No Secret Recipe-The Learning Path of A+ students

DKL Study History: 3 years.

Jack has graduated into middle school this Fall, we all miss him very much. He shows many traits of a talented student: efficient, self-disciplined, focused – so focused that he tends to “cut through the noise” by ignoring some details.

Aside from his works, we are also impressed by Jack’s work manner. During the most chaotic point of the COVID-19 season, Jack. would attend every online session precisely on-time, with all equipment in position, along with books and stationary prepared.

Jack. worked seamlessly with us, and every teacher misses the strong rapport with him.

According to his latest MAP test report, Jack is ranked at amongst the top 10% of all MAP Test recipients in North America. At grade 5, his reading level is the equivalent of Grade 6.5 to 7.2.

The main challenge that Jack faces is his communication among peers. He told the DKL teacher, “I feel awkward when giving a speech, even when my content is well-prepared. Also, I don’t know how to keep people’s attention on my topic, and I don’t know how to persuade others.”

DKL Speech Workshop

During the DKL Speech workshop, DKL teachers wrote the following feedback to Jack:

Regarding his overall mindset and personal attitude in a public presentation,
Jack usually builds solid ideas and content, but his oral influence is limited.

My personal understanding is that Jack actually did work towards developing his ideas with a specific audience in mind. However, given the uncertainty that he feels about other people’s reaction, he tends to be more passive in communicating his ideas.

I encouraged Jack to embrace these ideas:

  1. People generally do not want to listen to others; to get people’s attention, you need to present as if you are really interested in them, and that you really want to share.
  2. Design everything in your speech with a specific audience in mind, make them feel as if they can understand your points with ease and build up excitement towards your topic. People are more likely to listen to you when they feel that you truly care about them.

After intensive speech sessions at DKL, Jack can incorporate LOGOS, ETHOS, PATHOS into his speeches. He said, “I feel so much less awkward now.
I think I know my audiences better; and I generally understand people better.”

Stay-home Mom and Working Mom: Which Option is Better?

Hi Everyone,

My name is Jack Today I want to share a topic about full-time working moms VS. stay-home moms. I figure that if you are going to have children one day, this question will become a major question for you, or maybe a major question to your future wife.

I would say, being a full-time working mom is a better choice.

Firstly, when you are working full-time, you can earn money to help your child grow and improve. For example, my friend Zoey’s mom, Mrs. H, is a full-time working mom. Mrs. H does not normally spend time with her daughter. However, that makes Mrs. H more focused on work and making money. With the money that Mrs. H earns, she can put her daughter in a better school, buy her better computers, etc.

A good school is important because Zoey can grow to become more powerful. She lives her life for herself, but not for her mom.

Secondly, a full-time working mom can avoid family conflicts that most stay-home moms would have with their child. For example, conflicts relating to homework, housework chores, not paying attention to class, etc. This would happen more often to a stay-home mom than a full-time working mom. The result will be bad for both the child and the mother. The child will suffer a loss of confidence, having an attitude, and a higher chance of becoming a bully. Therefore, if the mom is away for a longer time, it is better. The mom doesn’t have to be stalking the child, she can check in once in a while.

Thirdly, I would say that a full-time mom can be more helpful with community building. For example, Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States, is a mother while being a politician. As a politician, she can help build the community services in a school district at a larger scale. This way, although Kamala Harris is not volunteering like many stay-home moms, she is actually more helpful for the community.

With all these considerations in mind, I would say that a full-time working mom is a better choice. Because she can benefit her child with all the money she makes, and she doesn’t have to interfere with the child’s life too much. Lastly, some working moms at important work positions can be more beneficial to their community.
