DKL Study History: 3 years.
Ellen is a 10-year-old girl. She is both talented and hard-working. The accuracy and depth in her non-fictional writing works are a great manifest of her academic attitude.
Her school report from the Spring semester, 2021 shows that Ellen is performing at a reading and writing proficiency level of 10th Grade, the equivalent of a qualified 16-year-old.

For a serious student like Ellen, one challenge that she faces is how to maintain attention from her readers (or audience) to her non-fiction writing works.
A DKL teacher would often ask Ellen: What kinds of topics spark interest? What kinds of words connect with the readers and make them want to read more? If non-fiction and facts are, by nature, dry content, then how can we keep people engaged?
Ellen composed a non-fiction writing piece on the Amazon Rainforest, but smartly, she used a diary format which shares the character’s emotions and thoughts. Ellen’s work moved readers with a young girl’s adventurous spirit and educated us with her painstakingly detailed account on the ecosystem inside the fascinating rain forest.
